"Last week I attended Le Web, the largest Internet event in Europe. It
was my first time and it was a great event! The speakers were excellent
and I had the chance to network with many amazing people."

One of my biggest dream is to attend on of this event someday. It would be really great seeing all those people behind the interweb scene.

You're right, culture will be the hardest element to overcome while building a startup community in Japan, but not matter where you go geographically, there is always some obstacle that must be overcome.

For example, Atlanta, where I'm located is not the worst place to get funded but it's far from ideal. On the technology side, traditionally all the startup money has flowed to businesses in the financial industry, or more recently bio-tech as a result of government incentives. Additionally, Atlanta is absolutely dominated by real estate investors. So, while there is money to be had, you really need to be operating in one of these preferred niches in order to attract attention. The 2008 financial crisis devastated the real estate and financial sectors, so Atlanta was hit particularly hard by the recession. Clearly the economy needs to diversify beyond just real estate and finance, but that will take time and effort; Atlanta investors today only know real estate and finance.

You also mentioned the Japanese "herd mentality" in your post. As an outsider looking in on Japan, I, too, have observed a high-level cultural desire to belong to a group, much stronger than in the more individualistic West. I believe that will be an advantage in helping to build the necessary supporting startup community. It will take some time for the incubators such as ONL springing up in Japan to build a critical mass of experienced entrepreneurs, but once that group is there it will inevitably be an extremely close-knit and supportive group.

Social media has evolved into a great tool to be able to inform people around the world! If used correctly this can really help each country with divulging information specially that we are in the digital age. Very nice article!

Hi Hiro,
Google Wave is actually no longer available as a google service. It was open sourced to the Apache Software Foundation. The source code is freely available, and you can set up your own wave over at ONL (that may be fun). http://incubator.apache.org/wave/source-code.html

However, if you are not on Google Plus, let me know and i will invite you!
